The customer is a United States federally designated organ procurement organization. The organization operates in a complex, healthcare-adjacent environment where protecting sensitive donor and recipient information is essential to supporting its mission and maintaining trust across the transplant community.

The Challenge

The customer wanted to advance its cybersecurity program beyond incremental, compliance-driven improvements. Leadership recognized that the organization needed a more structured approach to security, stronger operational support, and a clear roadmap for long-term maturity.

A self-assessment had provided an initial view of the organization’s alignment with NIST SP 800-171, but the customer wanted an independent perspective to validate its current position, identify gaps, and establish practical remediation priorities. At the same time, its internal IT team was overextended and needed additional expertise without increasing headcount.

The customer had already invested in Microsoft 365 E3 and the Microsoft Defender Suite Add-On, but many of those capabilities were not being fully utilized. The organization needed greater clarity about which security features it already owned, where additional licensing could add value, and how Microsoft technology could replace overlapping third-party tools.

The customer also wanted to improve its ability to manage and protect sensitive information. Data sprawl, dark data, inconsistent retention, and limited visibility into data ownership created a need for a more deliberate data governance strategy and a potential roadmap for Microsoft Purview.

The Solution

The customer worked with Avertium to create a connected security modernization strategy that addressed immediate compliance needs while building toward stronger security operations, better use of Microsoft technology, and greater data governance maturity.

The engagement began with a NIST SP 800-171 Assessment. This gave the customer an independent view of its security posture, identified control gaps, and established priorities for developing a more formal and sustainable security program.

Avertium also conducted a Tool Consolidation and Optimization Assessment to help the customer understand how its existing products compared with the capabilities available through Microsoft 365. The analysis identified overlapping functionality, opportunities to streamline the technology environment, and areas where Microsoft could replace redundant tools.

Through Microsoft’s Modern Security Operations Envisioning Workshop, the customer explored how Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft XDR could support a more integrated approach to security operations. The workshop expanded the customer’s original focus beyond managed SIEM and demonstrated how broader XDR coverage could improve detection, investigation, and response across its Microsoft environment.

The customer subsequently selected Fusion MXDR for Microsoft, gaining access to managed security operations expertise aligned with its Microsoft technology. This allowed the organization to extend its internal team and strengthen detection and response coverage without building the entire capability in-house.

Avertium also helped the customer begin defining its data governance priorities through its Microsoft Purview services. Discussions focused on dark data, classification, labeling, retention, data loss prevention, and risky user scenarios, creating a foundation for future Microsoft Purview adoption.

Customer Outcomes

  • Greater confidence in its security direction: The customer gained an independent view of its security posture, a clearer understanding of its control gaps, and a prioritized foundation for continued improvement.
  • More value from existing Microsoft investments: The organization identified opportunities to use Microsoft-native capabilities more effectively across endpoint, identity, data protection, and security operations.
  • Reduced technology complexity: The customer found opportunities to replace redundant tools, reduce reliance on more than five vendors, and simplify licensing and support.
  • Approximately $35,000 in potential annual savings: The assessment uncovered a more cost-effective path to E5-level capabilities through a targeted Microsoft 365 E3 plus add-on configuration, with estimated savings of approximately $3.25 per user per month.
  • A stronger business case for XDR: The Modern Security Operations Envisioning Workshop helped the customer understand the value of unifying Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft XDR and supported its decision to adopt Fusion MXDR for Microsoft.
  • Expanded security operations support: Fusion MXDR for Microsoft extended the customer’s internal team with managed expertise and supported stronger detection and response coverage.

Next Steps

The customer’s next phase will focus on deepening its Microsoft strategy and advancing data governance. A Microsoft Data Security Envisioning Workshop focused on Microsoft Purview will help the organization evaluate potential use cases and build a business case for its next investment.

The organization also plans to continue aligning its Microsoft licensing with its security priorities, use the NIST SP 800-171 assessment and Fusion MXDR engagement as a foundation for continued maturation, and evaluate opportunities to expand its program through continuous threat exposure management.

A More Strategic Path Forward

By validating its security foundation, simplifying its technology environment, and expanding its use of Microsoft security capabilities, the customer is moving from reactive, compliance-driven improvements toward a more strategic and sustainable security program.

With a clearer roadmap, stronger operational support, and a defined path for data governance, the organization is better positioned to protect sensitive information, reduce complexity, and support its mission with greater confidence.
